Pope Francis Visits the USA

I am thrilled to offer a series of lessons for the Pope's visit to the USA.  My kids have really loved getting to know the Pope, and they can't wait to see him daily in the news.

New Reading Series!

Wonders Reading  - McGraw Hill

We just adopted a new reading series I'm so excited about!  We have used our old series for about 8 years, so we are ready for some changes.  The new series is Common Core aligned, so no more searching to see if we are on the right track for our skills.

I decided to spend the weekend getting organized for the series and created a new TPT lesson for the ENTIRE YEAR VOCABULARY!   I think the kids will love it and it will make my life so easy to have all the words in one note book.

Easy to construct!
Purchase a composition book for each child (our kiddos bring them in their supplies) Attach the label I constructed:

.

Inside - each story will have the eight vocabulary words premade for you.  All the kids have to do is cut and paste into the book.

Finally they open the section and either define and/or write the word in a sentence.

Here is the lesson on my TPT site!   I really hope it helps some of my other Second Grade teacher friends that are getting ready for the new school year.

Finishing UP!

We are finishing up our Stations of the Cross books.  We stopped to do our Holy Week activities and we now are back finishing up the Stations.

It was so touching today to see the children write prayers about someone who has died in their family.  I think this opportunity to write their own prayer has given them some real comfort in the knowledge that Jesus died for us.  There was so many children that wrote about heaven, and seeing their family members again.

Prayers - Hands of Jesus Books

The children have completed two of the Stations of the Cross pages for their booklets.  It is amazing how much they learned creating their pages.

They wrote very heart-felt prayers about how they felt about what is happening to Jesus....
This one says....Jesus I am trying to be brave but, it is hard...so can you try to help me.  Amen.

From the mouths of babes....meaningful prayers we can all use.

God, please help me be brave when I need to.  Help me face my fears so I'm not scared.  Amen.

These are prayers after the discussion about Jesus having to carry the cross.  They can understand his fear, and how he tried to be brave even though he was so scared.

We went to the church and looked at the first two stations.  The children could tell me exactly what was happening in each of the stations.... I think they are getting it!

Beginning Lent- Hands of Jesus

Today we begin our Stations of the Cross - Hand of Jesus booklets.  The kids loved it!   We had such a great day Ash Wednesday talking about Lent and our plans for the 40 days.  Now, we began to talk about the journey of Jesus and what the Stations of the Cross are in our church and in other churches.

We began by coloring our covers and taking time to look at the picture of the three crosses - we talked about that picture and what it meant in Jesus' journey.

We continued to page 1 and talked about how Jesus was condemned to death.  What does that mean?  How does that happen?  What may it have looked like?  How did he feel?

The kids then helped a buddy trace their hands and construct our first page of the booklet.
We finished by placing string around our hands to represent Jesus and his hands.   It was a great activity and produced good discussion and thought about the sacrifice of Jesus for us.

Next week we will begin our writing for this page.
